Suspect in Wed. shooting shoots self

Police said Friday they didn't anticipate releasing further information on the shooting Wednesday night near Chambers and Mississippi.

But Friday afternoon the case took a bizarre turn when the suspect — who was also wanted in connection with a bank robbery, a home invasion and a menacing case — shot himself as police closed in.

NATURE:         Attempt Homicide Update

CASE NUMBER:   10.38004
The victim of the shooting in the 1150 block of South Fairplay Circle on September 22nd has been identified as 28-year-old Andre Lopez-Baker. He remains in critical condition in a local hospital.

On September 23rd, Major Crimes/Homicide investigators identified 31-year-old Isaac Martinez as a possible suspect in that shooting. Mr. Martinez and Andre Lopez-Baker are brother-in-laws.

In the course of the investigation of the shooting, detectives developed Isaac Martinez as a suspect in at least three other criminal incidents that occurred in Aurora during the past few weeks.

Isaac Martinez had an active warrant for his arrest obtained by Aurora Police Department District 3 detectives for a Home Invasion Robbery that Mr. Martinez is alleged to have committed on September 9, 2010.

In conjunction with the Rocky Mountains Safe Streets Task Force, the Major Crimes/Homicide unit developed Mr. Martinez as the suspect in an armed bank robbery that occurred at the Wells Fargo bank located at 2222 South Buckley Road at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday, September 22, 2010.

Mr. Martinez was also identified as the suspect in a Felony Menacing that took place later that same day in the 4200 block of South Parker Road at a restaurant/bar.

It was after the Felony Menacing that Isaac Martinez is suspected of having shot Andre Baker-Lopez near South Chambers Road and East Mississippi Avenue.

During the afternoon hours on September 24, 2010, investigators developed information that Isaac Martinez was staying at a hotel in Blackhawk. Blackhawk/Gilpin County SWAT responded to the hotel. As SWAT breached the hotel room door, Mr. Martinez shot himself. He was transported to a metro area hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
