Student shot near Central HighAURORA | An Aurora Central High School student is in serious condition after being shot near the school Monday afternoon.
The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of East 11th Avenue and Newark Street, just a few yards from the campus’ northern edge.
Police said when officers arrived at the scene, the victim, a 17-year-old girl who attends Central, had been rushed to a local hospital by friends in a purple Acura Integra.
The girl, whose name was not released, remained in serious condition as of 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Police wouldn’t say whether the girl was in a car or in the street when she was shot.
Investigators are looking for a bald, heavyset Hispanic man driving a primer gray or black Dodge Neon sedan and are offering a $5,000 reward for information on the case.
A 15-year-old sophomore at the school, who refused to give her name, said the injured girl was a junior at Central who often hung out at the intersection where she was shot. The girl also said there was supposed to be a gang fight there between two local gangs before the girl was shot.
Central and other area schools were locked down after the shooting, but were reopened by 4 p.m.
