AURORA | An inmate who was booked into the Aurora City Jail over the weekend died early Monday morning of undetermined causes.
Jeffon Shaw, 37, was arrested April 2 on warrants for battery and third-degree assault related to domestic violence. He was not combative when he was brought into the detention center, city officials say.
On Monday at about 2:55 a.m., detention center staff noticed Shaw appeared unresponsive in his cell. They administered CPR and used a defibrillator to revive him until emergency services arrived.
He was pronounced dead shortly after he was brought to a local hospital.
The Arapahoe County coroner’s office autopsied Shaw on Monday but said it could be weeks before they know how he died.
A spokeswoman there said Shaw did not have any obvious injuries or trauma to his body. The coroner won’t be able to issue a ruling on Shaw’s death until investigators receive Shaw’s medical records and results of a histology exam and a toxicology exam, which could take up to 10 weeks.
