AURORA | When a Limon police officer was gunned down Wednesday night, Aurora police sent a specialized armored police vehicle to the small town on the eastern plains to assist SWAT officers there, police said.
Police said Thursday they sent the department’s Ballistic Engineered Armored Response (BEAR) tactical rescue vehicle to Limon on Wednesday at the request of police there after Limon police Officer Jay Sheridan, 27, was killed.
Sheridan, a 6-year veteran of Limon Police, was gunned down while trying to serve an arrest warrant on a fugitive sex offender at a Limon trailer park, according to state authorities.
Sheridan’s killer, Dennis Mark Hasty, 52, later shot himself after a standoff with police.
Two officers who were with Sheridan barricaded themselves inside the home during the standoff and police agencies from around the region responded.
Aurora police purchased the $315,000 BEAR in 2007 and at the time said it would be used not only in Aurora, but around the region.
