AURORA | An Aurora firefighter was hospitalized Monday morning after a driver rear ended a fire truck on Interstate 70 in northeast Aurora.
The crash was one of many Monday morning as commuters tried to navigate icy and roads during morning rush hour.
“It was busy, it was pretty icy this morning,” said Aurora fire Capt. Al Robnett, a spokesman for Aurora fire.
And roads in the metro area will likely be difficult Tuesday morning as well. Meteorologists forecast snow to start falling Monday and continue through Tuesday, with a few inches accumulating in the metro area and more than a foot on the eastern plains and in the mountains.
Monday’s crash involving the fire truck happened around 6:30 a.m. on I-70 near E470.
Robnett said the truck was responding to call when the firefighter driving tried to use an emergency turnaround on the highway.
A driver slammed into the back of the truck, leaving one firefighter hurt and damaging the truck.
Robnett said the firefighter had minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
The driver of the car that hit the truck was also injured but refused treatment, Robnett said.
The truck was damaged and Robnett said it isn’t clear when Aurora fire will be able to use it again.
Lt. Chuck DeShazer, who runs the Aurora police traffic section, said the force of the crash caused a bottle to fall and the bottle struck a firefighter.
The driver who rear-ended the bus was cited for driving too fast for the conditions, he said.
DeShazer said that while police were busy with several accidents Monday, none in Aurora were very serious.
