Police: Officer shoots armed suspect **UPDATE**


AURORA | An Aurora police officer shot and killed an armed man Thursday night near East Colfax Avenue and Macon Street, police said. 

Police said the officer was in the 1400 block of Macon around 8:30 p.m. conducting a narcotics investigation involving several officers. 

At one point, the officer relayed to other police that the drug suspect was armed with a gun and approaching him. The officer then shot the man, who died at the scene. 

Police have not released the name of the officer or the man who was killed. 

A police department spokeswoman declined to say Friday whether the officer who shot the suspect was in uniform or working in plain clothes or undercover.

The officer who fired his weapon is on administrative while the case is investigated, as is standard policy. 

The spokeswoman said she expected to release more details later today, including the dead man’s name.

Officer Involved Shooting

Aurora, Colo. – On February 10, 2011 shortly before 8:30 PM the Aurora Police Narcotics Unit was conducting surveillance on a male who was the subject of an active narcotics investigation.  

The male went to the 1400 block of N. Macon St. where some officers had set up in the area.  A short time later an officer relayed to other officers that he was being approached by an armed male.  It is unknown at this time why the male approached the officer. 

Shots were fired by the officer striking the male.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  There were two guns recovered at the scene.  The male’s name is not being released at this time.

The officer was not injured.  The officer is not being identified at this time.

Additional officers responded to the scene to provide assistance and secure the area. Major Crimes Unit/Homicide detectives, assisted by the Crime Scene Investigation Unit, responded to lead the investigation.

As is standard procedure in all officer involved shootings, the officer who discharged his duty weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal review of this incident.
