Prelim this afternoon in shooting that sparked standoff last fall

Michael Wade Jackson
AURORA | A judge is scheduled to rule this afternoon whether there is enough evidence for a man, who is accused of killing his friend and shooting the man’s son last fall, to stand trial.

Michael Wade Jackson, 57, is set to appear in Arapahoe County Court at 1:30 p.m. for a preliminary hearing.

Jackson is accused of killing Mohamed Abushahma, 50, and wounding Abushahma’s 17-year-old son Sept. 11 at Abushahma’s home on South Tucson Street.

Abushahma’s son, whose name was not released, was seriously injured but police said last fall he was expected to survive.

Police responded to the home in a quiet neighborhood north of Utah Park around 2 a.m. Sept. 11 on a report of an armed man.

There, officers found Jackson in front of the home holding a gun.

During the 90-minute standoff  police dispatchers received a 911 call from the 17-year-old, who had been shot and was still inside the house.

While officers in front of the house distracted Jackson, another group of officers snuck into the home from the back and rescued the 17-year-old, police said. Inside the home, police found Abushahma dead.

Around 3:30 a.m., Jackson surrendered to police.

Abushahma’s neighbors said after the shooting that Jackson had been staying with the Abushahma family for a short time because he was having a tough time financially.

Neighbors said Abushahma, who was born in Libya, was a friendly man who was well liked in the neighborhood.
